Hawks stun UNZA Pacers

UNIVERSITY of Zambia Pacers title aspirations suffered a setback at the weekend when pre-match underdogs Hawks stunned them 90- 62 in a Midlands Basketball Association Week 13 fixture at National Sports Development Centre in Lusaka.

The weekend results placed defending champions Matero Magic at an advantage especially that they earned two valuable points against fellow title contenders Green Buffaloes who they beat 68 – 60 in a thrilling Sunday evening encounter.

Except for Junior Buffaloes who outclassed Capital Raiders 81-32 in a men’s B – league fixture, it turned out to be a bad weekend for the Army sponsored sides as Buffaloes women were gunned down 81 – 67 by league leaders Matero Magic Sparks.
Buffaloes loss to Sparks means the top three teams have each lost two matches and tied on points but UNZA Honeys who beat Napsa Breeze 69 – 59 top the women’s table which will evidently go down the wire.
Napsa Hurricanes and Munali Suns respectively escaped upsets at the hands of bottom teams Intrepid Bulls and Nishati Denvers to stay on course for a place in the national championships play offs.
Hurricanes edged Bulls 54- 53 while the Suns outshone Denvers 79 -74.
Lusaka City Council Looters kept the pressure on the top three by handing a 78 -50 lesson to promotion side Heroes Play United to move up to third position.
In other men’s B – League fixtures played at Zamsure Sports Complex in Lusaka, Earthrow Bulldogs maintained grip on the summit of the table silencing second placed Junior Magic 74 – 61.
Green Eagles held on to the third position by making Kabwe Legends trip to Lusaka a fruitless venture via a 106-80 score line.
Lilanda Heat edged Huskies 69-67 while Junior Hurricanes managed a 52- 49 win over Gallant Air Knights.
In the Copperbelt Basketball Association men’s league, Lunga Bullets maintained their 100 percent run with a fruitful trip to Ndola where they beat Kalewa Garrisons 64 -55.
At the same venue Kamfinsa Cardinals dealt a blow to Ndola Takers with a 51 – 46 victory while Ndola Nets bagged two points at the expense of KCC Mucho Spurs winning 43 – 41.
