NANCY SIAME, Lusaka
SOUTHERN Province Minister Edify Hamukale has urged European diplomats accredited to Zambia to explore investment opportunities in the region, ranging from tourism to manufacturing.
Making a presentation on investment opportunities in the province to the diplomats at Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, Dr Hamukale said there are a number of investment opportunities which have not been explored.
“I am aware that your countries have been working with us to foster development and we want this to continue,” he said.
He urged the diplomats to identify areas of investment in Southern Province and not just concentrate on investing in Lusaka.
Dr Hamukale said Southern Province wants to add value to products produced in the area for export.
He said the province is dominated by agriculture activities which investors can take advantage of to set up out grower schemes and factories, to make finished products.
“The Choma-Kalomo belt has the highest maize production where a cornflakes factory can be put up to meet the local demand,” Dr Hamukale said.
Dr Hamukale said a lot of hardwood and rosewood is found in Zimba and Kazungula where a timber factory can be put up to make belts, shoes and handbags, among other items.
He added that the province also has a number of tourist attractions which investors can take advantage of to set up accommodation facilities to meet the increasing demand.
Dr Hamukale also mentioned the possibility of setting up a meat and dairy processing factory due to the high number of cattle in the area.
He and his delegation later showed the diplomats a video of the many investment opportunities in the province.
