Gunduza to maintain national team

MATHEWS KABAMBA, Lusaka
NEWLY-appointed national boxing team coach Maybin Gunduza will maintain the same team his predecessor Kennedy Kanyanta selected for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games qualifiers.
Gunduza said in an interview on Friday that he will want to build from where Kanyanta left.
Kanyanta selected Ben Muziyo (middleweight), Mbachi Kaonga (welterweight), Emmanuel Ngoma (bantamweight), Simon Mwale (flyweight), Orience Lungu (lightweight) and Julian Kasonka (flyweight) for the outing to Cameroon in March.
“I will maintain the same team my predecessor called and we are scheduled to go into residential camp tomorrow [yesterday]. According to the programme, we will be in camp until March when we travel for the qualifiers,” Gunduza said.
He also called on affiliates that refused to release boxers because of wrangles in the Zambia Boxing Federation to put national interest first.
“For now, I cannot jump to promises, I have to weigh fitness and endurance levels of the boxers before spelling out any objectives. But I am confident that the boxers are capable of performing at that level,” he said.
