Guard shoots cop

A SECURITY guard has shot and wounded a police officer in Lusaka’s Kabangwe area after suspecting the law enforcement officer of being

a criminal.
The incident happened on Thursday around 03:00 hours at a named lodge at 15 Miles on Great North Road.
The injured officer, only identified as detective sergeant Namomba of Ngwerere Police Station, was shot on the right arm and grazed on the stomach by 56-year-old George Phiri, a security guard at the lodge.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said in a statement yesterday that the incident happened when Mr Phiri, who was in the company of another guard identified as Misheck Chingumbe, 36, also of 15 Miles who, whilst on duty at the lodge, heard some noise and suspected that there were criminals.
Ms Katongo said the two guards then contacted the lodge owner, who later called for police intervention.
It was then that four police officers rushed to the lodge. However, upon arrival at the lodge, the security guard who was armed with a Greener opened fire on the officers after mistaking them for criminals, thereby shooting one of them.
“The victim is currently admitted to Matero Level-One Hospital and his condition has been described as stable by medical personnel. The two guards are in police custody as investigations are ongoing,” Ms Katongo said.
Meanwhile, a seven-year-old boy died on the spot while five others sustained injuries in a road traffic accident which happened on Thursday around 16:00 hours on Kamiteta Road in Chingola’s Nchanga North.
