I WOULD like to commend Kabwata member of Parliament Given Lubinda for his decision to honour Graig Lungu and Augustine Lungu by naming two streets in his constituency after them.
But may l give special tribute to Graig, whom l regard as the doyen of Zambian stage theatre. Graig and Danny ‘Sausande ‘ Kanengoki were behind the formation of Zambia National Service (ZANASE) theatre club in 1981 while undergoing 20 months compulsory military training for Grade 12 school-leavers at Kafue ZNS camp.
I was among school-leavers who watched drama by the theatre club, especially over weekends. Graig and Sausande used to entertain us with hilarious sketches whereby for a while, we forgot about the unpleasant rigours of military training and harsh treatment from overzealous ZNS instructors. No wonder the UNIP government decided to employ the two late artistes as ZNS commissioned officers after military training as a mark of recognition for their noteworthy contribution towards the development of theatre in the country. May the souls of the departed artistes rest in eternal peace.
