Govt to blend cassava, wheat flour, maize meal

GOVERNMENT is looking at prospects of blending cassava with wheat flour and maize meal to improve nutritional value and boost the growth of the cassava sub sector in the country.
Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa said Government considers cassava in the diversification agenda from maize to other crops, and that this can greatly contribute to job creation.
Mr Shawa said at the cassava value chain stakeholders’ workshop yesterday that in an effort to support the sub sector, Government has in the 2017/18 farming season allocated K2 million for diversification from maize.
“As you all are aware, the main goal of the Seventh National Development Plan is to create a diversified and resilient economy for sustainable growth and socio-economic transformation driven by agriculture, mining and tourism. Cassava is one such crop that can assist to achieve this goal,” he said.
