Gov’t officers ‘soak’ evidence

THE Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is taken aback after learning that some officers at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock failed to provide accounting documents and receipts because they [papers] were soaked, destroyed or misplaced. In some cases, the officers refused to grant accounting books to auditors because they were missing. The Auditor General’s report revealed that officers in Mazabuka failed to give receipts to auditors because they were soaked, while in Luangwa, an accounting book went missing. Other contentious issues cited by the Auditor General’s report included the increase in the contract sum for building of a breeding plant in Mazabuka from K10 million to K37 million.
