Germany commends Zambia’s good governance

THE Zambian government should be commended for its stance and effort in promoting good governance, freedom of the media and democracy. German Ambassador to Zambia Anne Wagner-Mitchell commended Government for creating a conducive environment for balanced media coverage. Dr Wagner-Mitchell said this when she called on Minister of Information and Media Chushi Kasanda at her office. This is according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Media public relations unit. And Ms Kasanda said the new government has prioritised the role of the media in creating a well-informed citizenry which participates effectively in national affairs. She said key among the players is the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS), which is present in all the 116 districts in the country. Ms Kasanda said this places ZANIS strategically in disseminating information because it is closer to the people. The minister said the institution has a number of operational challenges in meeting its goal of gathering and disseminating information. The challenges include transport, equipment and other operational tools. Ms Kasanda said Government has embarked on a vigorous programme to re-equip and reposition ZANIS to enable it to play an effective role in informing the public. And Ms Kasanda said Zambia values the warm relations the country enjoys with Germany, Brazil and France spurning many years. The minister, who is chief government spokesperson, said it is Government’s desire to further strengthen the relations for mutual benefit.
