General Education Minister spot-on

Dear editor,
MINISTER of General Education David Mabumba was recently in Chibombo to address teachers.
Among the issues that he touched on was the need to do away with some topics and subjects at grades 7, 9 and 12 levels.
The minister, who is a teacher by profession, was very right because at the moment the learners are overloaded with close to nine subjects which make examinations take so long.
At Grade 12 we can reduce subjects to let’s say seven and at grade 7 we can have examination papers having both objective and subjective questions.
Like the minster rightly put it, some of the grade eight’s passed the examination purely on guess work. This could be seen in the inability of some pupils to read and write properly.
Come 2019 we need to have seminars and workshops for teachers to review what the minister said in all the 116 districts. By 2020, implementation can start.
