Game Stores manager arrested for sexual harassment

By PAUL MBOSHYA
GAME Stores manager Vincent Pallan has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual harassment and indecent assault contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Acting Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Pallan was arrested yesterday and is currently in police custody at Lusaka Central Police Station.
“I can confirm that Vincent Pallan, 46, of house number 8 Mass Media in Lusaka, was charged yesterday with indecent assault, contrary to section 137 and sexual harassment contrary to section 137(a) of the Penal Code,” Mrs Katongo said.
She said Mr Pallan was arrested after police investigated and interrogated him.
Police commenced investigations into Mr Pallan’s case after they received a report from a former Game Stores employee who alleged that she was sexually harassed.
And Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda said his ministry had launched investigations into the alleged sexual harassment at Game Stores in Lusaka.
Mr Shamenda said in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lusaka that the ministry is probing reports that Game Stores manager Mr Pallan has been sexually and verbally abusing female employees.
“The ministry is conducting investigations in the matter in collaboration with the Victim Support Unit and the public will be informed of the outcome of the investigations in due course,” he said.
The matter was brought to the attention of the ministry by both the complainant, Mukamuliti Mwila, and the accused on two separate meetings on Tuesday this week.
The minister has advised relevant authorities to ensure that Mr Pallan stays away from work and does not leave the country until the matter is concluded.
Mr Pallan is alleged to have harassed Ms Mwila on several occasions.
Ms Mwila alleges that Mr Pallan made some advances in an attempt to have carnal knowledge of her and she was dismissed after she refused.
