Fugitive gets 1 year

THE Kabwe Magistrate’s Court has slapped a one-year sentence against a 24-year-old man of Chisamba for escaping from Mukobeko Prison.
Youngson Mashilindi of Chiwala village in Chief Chamuka’s area was serving a five-year jail term at Mukobeko Medium Prison in Kabwe.
The convict pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody in January this year.
He pleaded guilty before Chimuka Mutafela on Monday.
“On his own admission of guilt, I convict him as charged,” Mr Mutafela told  Mashilindi after he  admitted the  facts presented in court in connection with the offence he committed.
The sentence will  run consecutively  with the five-year sentence he is serving. He was convicted  for stock theft.
In his sentence, Mr Mutafela told Mashilindi that the offence of escaping from lawful custody carried a maximum sentence of three years.
“I also note that you are a first offender and you have readily pleaded guilty and you have not wasted the court’s time,” Mr Mutafela said.
“Therefore, I will be lenient. I sentence you to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour to run consecutively with the current sentence.”
Earlier, a public prosecutor  Aaron Chisanga told the court when he presented facts that the convict was serving a five-year sentence at Mukobeko Medium Prison.
Mr Chisanga said on the day he escaped, he was in the custody of a prison warder, a Mr Nyembe, and seven other prisoners and they were working in Bwacha township and he was discovered to have escaped about 14: 00 hours while the prisoners were going back to Mukobeko Maximum Prison.
He said the case  was reported to the police who instituted investigations. Mashilindi was arrested  in Chisamba.
In mitigation, Mashilindi pleaded with the court for leniency, saying that he escaped because he heard that his wife who was pregnant was suffering.
