Fisherman drowns after boat collision

A 50-YEAR-OLD fisherman of Nsumbu in Nsama district has drowned after his canoe capsized when it collided with a boat on Lake Tanganyika.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcolm Mulenga said yesterday that the incident happened on Wednesday around 01:00 hours.
He named the deceased as James Mukuka of Munkonge village.
Mr Mukuka was in the company of Chansa Chilambwe, 24, of Chishela village, who managed to swim ashore.
He said Mr Mukuka’s canoe was being coxswained by Elias Mazimba, 20, of Kasakalambwe village.
“Whilst Mazimba was fishing on the lake, he smashed into a small boat on which Mr Mukuka and Mr Chilambwe were,” he said.
He said police have arrested Mazimba to help with investigations.
And Mr Mulenga said police in Nchelenge have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly murdering his friend.
He said Thomas Chongo, 36, of Katoto village was allegedly beaten by an instant justice mob ?on Tuesday around 20:00 hours and he died the next day.
Mr Mulenga said the suspect identified as Lackson C?hishimba was allegedly part of the mob which attacked Mr Chongo.
“The deceased sustained several body injuries and died the next day,” Mr Mulenga said.
The body is in St Paul’s Hospital mortuary.
“The suspect is being held to assist police with investigations,” Mr Mulenga said.
