‘Film needs theatre to develop’

NATIONAL Arts Theatre Association of Zambia (NATAAZ) national vice-chairperson Sydney Siafwa says in order for the film industry to flourish, there is need to develop theatre.Siafwa, who was speaking to the Weekend Mail in an interview on the sidelines of the NATAAZ Defence and Security Festival in Livingstone, said theatre is the foundation of the drama.
“We know that this is more like the foundation of the whole drama arrangement, so it’s important that we put a lot of effort in trying to build our actors,” he said.
The defence and security festival involved the Zambia Police-sponsored Nkwazi, Zambia Army outfit Green Buffaloes and Zanase which is under the Zambia National Services (ZNS).
Nkwazi, with their production “The Bride Price” scooped first position with 66 points, beating Zambia Army outfit Green Buffaloes who scored 64 and Zambia National Service (ZNS) group ZANASE who 61 points with respective productions “Product of Pain” and “The Wife & The Maid”.
“We hope the Correctional Services and Zambia Air Force [ZAF] will be able to organise themselves and take part next year,” Siafwa.
“We’re happy that we have had a good number of people from Livingstone join us to see what we are doing.
“We also had a number of actors from here. That is a plus to us. That is a good sign because it shows that we are sharing ideas. When people watch a play, they learn and will go and educate others too. So, we are developing theatre.”
