Film industry needs State support

DEAR EDITOR,
AS evidenced by increased movie production, the Zambian firm industry has been growing over the years. In order to support this growth, Government-driven policy initiatives are key.
Government should come up with laws and policy initiatives aimed at supporting the industry, including setting up a school of drama and fine arts at one of the public universities.
Government could also provide tax incentives to this industry and support including soliciting the help of countries with mature film industries such as India, the USA, Nigeria and the UK.
In fact, we could appoint officials whose job is simply engaging with Hollywood, Nollywood and Bollywood to get the very best for our film industry.
If supported, the film industry can create employment, widen our tax base, deepen Zambian culture and help to document our history.
COLLINS CHIBWE,
Lusaka
