THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has opened an inquiry against Nkana supporters following their unruly behaviour during Sunday’s Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final against Zesco United.
FAZ communications manager Desmond Katongo said in a statement released yesterday that the national governing body is working with the Zambia Police Service and the match commissioner in compiling evidence.
Nkana fans threw assorted missiles on the pitch to express their grievance against the decision by referee Wellington Kaoma to send off skipper Donashano Malama for a crude stomp on Zesco defender Ben Banh.
Zesco edged Nkana 2-0 courtesy of a brace by midfielder John Ching’andu.
“Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has opened up investigations into the conduct of Nkana Football Club supporters during last Sunday’s Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final featuring Zesco United and Nkana at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
“FAZ is currently working closely with the Zambia Police Service and the match commissioner in compiling the necessary evidence. The association will decide on the precise action to take in accordance with the disciplinary code.
“FAZ has zero tolerance towards hooliganism from any football club and we will not hesitate to dispense disciplinary action against erring clubs. FAZ will not hesitate to ban supporters or clubs that indulge in behaviour that doesn’t promote the spirit of fair play,” Katongo said.
He urged clubs to control their fans because they will be held accountable for any acts of hooliganism.
In 2011, Nkana were banned from using Nkana Stadium because of a riot that ensued after losing a league match to Zesco.
