Father, sons arrested over assault

NANCY SIAME, Lusaka
POLICE in Mpulungu have arrested a 56-year-old man and his two sons for allegedly burning and assaulting two men and a woman after accusing them of practising witchcraft.
Northern Province deputy commissioner of police Alfred Nawa said in an interview yesterday that the incident happened around 01:30 hours on Saturday.
Mr Nawa named the three as Jackson Tembo, 56, Daudi Tembo, 22, and Chomba Tembo, 25, all of Ilyendwe village in Mpulungu.
“The father and his sons got hold of the three whom they accused of practising witchcraft. They burnt one and severely beat up the other two,” he said.
The victims are George Chipili, 42, Katimba Mazimba, 45, and Margaret Nakasate, 65, all of the same village.
Mr Nawa said Mr Chipili was severely burnt on the back after he was tied to a tree and dry grass was put on him and fire ignited while the other two were whipped with sticks.
“Had it not been for the intervention of the police, these three would have died,” he said.
Mr Chipili is admitted to Mpulungu Rural Health Centre whilst the other two have been discharged.
Mr Nawa bemoaned the increase in the number of people being attacked on suspicion of practising witchcraft in the province.
“Such cases must be reported to the police and people must not take the law in their hands,” he said.
