OPPOSITION party UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has called on Government to expedite strategies in the agriculture sector that will boost food security.
Mr Hichilema observed that most of the food consumed in the country is produced by farmers who use oxen to cultivate the land.
In an interview on the side-lines of the Agritech expo in Chisamba on Friday, Mr Hichilema said it is important for stakeholders in the agriculture sector to ensure that farming becomes viable and provides not only food but income for the farmers.
“It is also important to promote better farming methods such as mechanisation but, as you know, most people cannot afford tractors. We need livestock to be available to our people. It is important that issues such as livestock disease control, restocking and genetic improvement are put in place, and also the overall management [of the sector],” Mr Hichilema said.
He said empowering farmers with livestock will enable them improve on farm production in terms of efficiency and tillage.
Mr Hichilema, however, said Government should also consider lowering the cost of inputs to encourage more people to venture into agriculture as a business.
“Agriculture is a good sector that provides self-employment and also creates job opportunities for many people. Lowering the cost of production will bring about value addition that will help secure food and, of course, the supply of inputs must come on time to achieve growth in the sector,” he said.
