THE Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has advised farmers to desist from using excess fertiliser and chemicals as they are a threat to food security.
Recent studies have revealed that more than half of agricultural soils are moderately or highly degraded due to unsustainable management practices.
FAO deputy strategic programme leader Festus Akinnifesi said in a statement recently that agricultural sustainability requires effective management of the soil, water and crop to increase production.
