Ex-mayor commits suicide

MAYENGO NYIRENDA, Chipata
IMMEDIATE past Chipata mayor Jealousy Phiri has committed suicide after allegedly obtaining money by false pretences.

Eastern Province Commissioner of police Alex Chilufya said Phiri, a resident of Malifendum township, was facing several cases of obtaining money by false pretences.
Phiri, 66, was found dead yesterday around 05:00 hours at Chipata School football ground by a member of the public who alerted the police.
Police rushed to the scene and identified the deceased as the former mayor of Chipata.
“I can confirm that a case of suicide was reported to police this morning (yesterday) on a phone by a member of the public, whose names are not known, when he went jogging around 05:00 hours,” Mr Chilufya said.
The former civic leader was found seated on the driver’s seat of his car which was locked.
He said Phiri had foam coming out of his nostrils and there was an empty container of a pesticide besides the body.
Mr Chilufya said the body was taken to the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
And a check at the funeral house by Daily Mail revealed scores of shocked family members and Malifendum township residents.
The deceased’s first-born son Elias Phiri said the family is in shock with the demise of his father.
He said the family cannot understand what could have triggered his father’s decision to take his own life.
Phiri is survived by six children and a wife.
Chipata town clerk Davies Musenge said he is saddened by the death of Mr Phiri.
