FORMER Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) welterweight world champion Esther Phiri today makes a long awaited return to boxing when she faces Kenyan Evelyne Odero in a non- title bout at Kabulonga’s Chez Ntemba VIP in Lusaka.
Phiri, who was initially supposed to fight Jenipher Facia of Colombia, last fought on January 29, 2011 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, when she beat Luz Florez of Colombia on unanimous points decision to unify the WIBA and WIBO welterweight titles.
Phiri’s come-back has been postponed several times because her promoters, Exodus Boxing Stables, struggled to raise money for the non-title bout.
The Zambian boxer, who is also former Women International Boxing Organisation (WIBO) welterweight world champion, has been inactive for over two years but her trainer, Anthony Mwamba, is confident she is ready to fight again.
On the scale, Phiri weighed 65.5 kilogrammes while Odero was at 63.3.
Phiri, who boasts of an impressive 12-3-2 (4 KOs) record, is favoured to outpoint her opponent but Odero’s trainer, Daniel Wanyonyi, is also confident his boxer will knock out the Zambian.
Like Phiri, Odero has also fought 12 times winning eight, one draw and three defeats.
“I am here to win… I have to take victory back home. I have heard a lot about Esther and she is a good boxer but I will not be intimidated,” Odero said.
On the other hand, Phiri has admitted that the fight will be tough but she is confident she will triumph.
In the supporting bouts, Masozi ‘Drago’ Kamanga, will face Amos Temfuma in a cruiser weight non-title fight while Patience Mastara of Zimbabwe will slug it out with Lina Kasweka in a bantamweight non-title bout.
In other bouts, Sherif Kasongo faces Jacob Maganza in a welterweight non-title fight while Chimanga Babaguy will take on Mastro Mbangu with Edward Mwango slugging it out with Tom Chisenga in another bantamweight non-title fight.
