Esther, Almeida fight on April 29

DIANA MUTAKAFIMBO, Lusaka
THE Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight unification title rematch between Esther Phiri and South Africa’s Sandra Ahmeida has been set for April 29 in Lusaka.
Esther fought Sandra in May last year but the fight was controversially stopped in the third round after the South African sustained an injury on the right eye.
The judges settled for a technical draw.
Exodus Boxing Stables director Anthony Mwamba said in a statement issued yesterday that the boxers have agreed to meet at Government Complex in Lusaka.
The rematch was initially billed for September 12, 2015 at Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre but it was postponed after the South African withdrew from the contest.
Esther’s fight against another South African Julie Tshabalala on October 23 was equally postponed after the main sponsors requested for Esther’s signature as a brand ambassador.
“Julie fought Noni Tenge her native South African… she lost on unanimous point decision thereby making her ineligible to fight Esther in a title fight. This is why Sandra gets another shot at the title.
“This fight is going to be very exciting and will help the two countries involved strengthen their cordial relations especially that SuperSport is expected to televise the fight,” Mwamba said.
He said Superior Milling will be the main sponsors of the fight.
Mwamba appealed to the corporate world to support the event.
