Edible oil producers press for tax relief

MOUNT Meru Millers Zambia Limited has implored Government to remove the 16 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on edible oil in the 2018 national budget to promote competitiveness in the region and protect the local industry.

And the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, is in talks with local oil producers to find means of addressing the 16 percent VAT on edible oil.
Speaking when Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry permanent secretary Kayula Siame toured Mount Meru production plant yesterday, Mount Meru chief executive officer Dharmesh Patel said the oil market in Zambia will be in a crisis if the 16 percent VAT on edible oil is not removed or exempted.
