THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced April 3, 2020 as the dates for two local government elections in Luapula and Western provinces.
With the measures Government has put in place to control the further spread of the coronavirus, I am appealing to ECZ to consider postponing the two by-elections in the interest of public health.
Filing of nominations is followed by setting up of command centres and the start of campaigns – political parties and their candidates holding rallies as well as door-to-door campaigns, which will defeat the spirit of social distancing.
That is why ECZ should not go ahead with the two local government by-elections until the Ministry of Health has declared the country coronavirus-free.
