CHALI MULENGA, Livingstone
A 25-YEAR-OLD woman of Zambezi Sawmills in Livingstone has been sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by the Livingstone Magistrate’s Court for assaulting and injuring a seven-months-old baby after a drinking spree.
This is in a case in which Precious Zulu was charged with assault on a child.
It was alleged that Zulu on August 20 this year in Livingstone, assaulted a baby and inflicted injuries on it.
In mitigation, Zulu asked the court to exercise maximum leniency on her.
Passing the sentence, magistrate Adsen Shanduba said Zulu should have known that children are Government trophy and are protected by the State.
“Just because of wanting to drink beer you inflicted pain on a child because you claim that the child was disturbing your beer drinking, your actions were brutal and barbaric on an innocent child,†Mr Shanduba said.
He said what Zulu did was inhuman and she should be punished to deter would-be offenders.
“You went to drink and after you came back you inflicted pain on a seven-month-old child. All children are Government trophy and you have no right to mistreat children. It is for this reason that the court would like your sentence to be a lesson to would-be offenders.
“I will send you to prison for five years, which will be effective August 22 this year,†Mr Shanduba said.
