THE announcement that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) will soon develop an annual contingency plan to among other things spell out measures to respond to possible disasters ahead of the rainy season is indeed welcome.
We all remember how the rains last season wreaked havoc by destroying property and displacing people.
This season it is also expected that there will be floods in some areas.
It will surely be unwise for us to be caught unawares by disasters that will occur as a result of excessive rainfall.
Actually, the DMMU should have devised the plan long before considering that we are now in the rainy season. DMMU should understand that they do not have much time at their disposal. They need to act now to prepare for any disasters that may await us in this coming season.
