Ditched cop takes own life

A 28-year-old police constable in Chipata has committed suicide after his wife decided to leave him following a domestic quarrel.
Eastern Province deputy commissioner of police Patrick Bili announced at a press briefing in Chipata yesterday that Michael Mulenga Kasonga of Aslot took his life on Thursday between 05:00 and 07:00 hours.
“The constable had a dispute with his wife prior to that, and on the material day, the wife decided to leave the matrimonial home to go and stay with her mother,” he said.
Mr Bili said this incensed Mr Kasonga, who decided to commit suicide by taking a poisonous substance, citing problems in his marriage.
He said Mr Kasonga’s niece and a neigbour tried to save his life but he died on the way to Chipata General Hospital.
Mr Bili said Mr Kasonga left a suicide note.
Meanwhile, police in Livingstone have arrested a 34-year-old man of Kazungula in connection with the death of a taxi driver, CHOMBA MUSIKA reports in Choma.
Southern Province commissioner of police Mary Chikwanda said Carlos Nkandu of Bobwe village in Kazungula has been arrested over the death of Kelvin Lisole, 28, of Libuyu in Livingstone.
Ms Chikwanda said Lisole was found with gunshot wounds in the head. Police have recovered a firearm from the suspect, who was arrested on Thursday.
“On July 8, the deceased was found dead with gunshot wounds on the head in Chief Musokotwane’s area in Kazungula, where he was dumped by people who allegedly killed him and went away with his Toyota Corolla.
“Police instituted investigations, which led to the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of one suspect,” Ms Chikwanda said.
