‘MEN at Work’ Diggers on Saturday edged champions Red Arrows in a National Rugby League Week 14 match at Nkana West Rugby Field in Kitwe to remain in the race for the title.
Diggers, the 2012 champions, had a torrid time to defeat Arrows but clinched full points after posting two tries and a penalty.
Ntumba Besa netted the first try that international scrumhalf Benaya Mukwamba converted to put Diggers ahead.
Diggers doubled the advantage when Ackim Mushota placed a second try, which Mukwamba converted.
Mukwamba wrapped up his impressive performance with a second-half penalty.
Arrows scored through Patson Kunda, who placed a try that was converted by Perry Kaushiku.
Kaushiku went on to score a penalty but his effort turned out to be a consolation.
“It was not an easy one but it’s good that we managed to defeat the champions [Arrows] because this has boosted our morale heading into decisive matches. We are on course to reclaiming the title,” Diggers coach Robertson Kang’ongwe said.
Diggers are in the driving seat with 29 points, one ahead of Arrows.
NKWAZI 5 CHIBULUMA 0
Title-chasing Nkwazi also maintained their impressive run when they humbled Chibuluma at Yotamu Muleya ground in Lusaka while ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka beat Green Buffaloes 16-10 at Showgrounds in Lusaka.
