GABRIELLE Ellison, the graphic artist who designed Zambia’s national flag and the country’s stamps, has died in South Africa at age 87.
Mrs Ellison, a Zambian, worked at Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) Information Services.
She also designed the national coat of arms and many Zambian stamps from the 1960s to the 1980s, when she was head of the graphic arts section at the Ministry of Information.
Ministry of Tourism and Arts public relations officer Sakabilo Kalembwe said in an interview yesterday that Mrs Ellison died in a South African hospital yesterday where she was admitted to the intensive care unit for about a month.
Mrs Ellison was born in Lusaka, Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia), and worked mainly with oils, acrylics, watercolours, tempera and in three dimension form.
The British government awarded her the Order of the British Empire and the Zambian government awarded her the Grand Officer of Distinguished Service.
