Defence forces join food production

BANGWE NAVILEY, Jerusalem
PRESIDENT Lungu has tasked the defence forces to partner with Israel to promote irrigation agriculture.
Ministry of Defence permanent secretary Sturdy Mwale said the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of Zambia’s armed forces, tasked his ministry after visiting the Israeli Ministry of Defence International Co-operation Department.
“The Minister of Agriculture, Dora Siliya, has also given us some of the State farms so that we can use them for agricultural activities. Some of these State farms are in Luapula, North-Western and Lusaka provinces,” Mr Mwale said.
He said the Ministry of Defence also toured districts, including Shibuyunji, where Chief Shakumbila promised to give it over 20,000 hectares of land for irrigation.
“We are glad as a ministry to note that President Lungu wants us to contribute significantly towards national food security tapping into the Israeli technology.
“May I state that Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and Zambia National Service will now go full scale to contribute to the national food security with blessings from the Commander-in-Chief as dependency on copper has many challenges,” Mr Mwale said.
He said Zambia is a blessed nation which has peace and that the defence forces would focus on agriculture in peace times.
