DEC destroys 1.7 tonnes of cannabis

THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has destroyed 1.7 tonnes of cannabis and 17.7 kilogrammes of ephedrine.
Ephedrine, which is used for temporary relief of shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing due to bronchial asthma, is often abused for its stimulant qualities.
DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo said the drugs, which were destroyed in the presence of court officials and Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) officials were confiscated from culprits between May and October 2014.
“Normally, what happens is that when the court convicts a person for drug related offences, they [drugs] and whatever else found on the person is forfeited to the State. So this morning, we destroyed all the drugs we confiscated between May and October this year,” Ms Katongo said.
