Debt swap initiative extends to councils


GOVERNMENT has extended its initiative of a debt swap between civil servants and lending institutions to workers in local authorities. To cushion highly indebted public service workers, Government last month started implementing a debt swap initiative for about 60,000 civil servants who have loans with financial institutions. From July to next month-end, financial institutions will not deduct salaries of civil servants with loans as part of the reconciliation and implementation processes of the debt swap. President Edgar Lungu also directed that the defence personnel be incorporated in the programme. Civil Service Commission vice-chairperson Hillary Chipango said council employees have also been included to relieve their financial burdens. Mr Chipango said this here yesterday when he called on Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe.
