OVER 70 doctors have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 10 days, with the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) making a clarion call to corporate institutions and well-wishers to support the frontline workers. A real-time membership needs survey by ZMA on 400 participants revealed that of the infected, 38 are symptomatic and are being taken care of at home while 10 are in quarantine. Two are hospitalised while 20 others are asymptomatic. ZMA care-for-care givers coordinator Naeem Dalal said in a statement yesterday that the association has over 4,000 members.
Dr Dalal said of the people sampled, 176 are bereaved and are taking care of nuclear family members who have been infected by COVID-19 in the last two weeks. “With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our members have been at the forefront. With the current wave, many of our members are currently affected, infected and battling COVID-19. “These numbers are likely to go higher as the survey is ongoing. We have lost a handful of our members in this pandemic, and as a profession, we write to you (well-wishers) requesting for your support,” Dr Dalal said.
