Court sentences ‘hammer-wielder’ to 18 months in prison

CHRISTINE CHIHAME, Kitwe
A 46-YEAR-OLD man of Ipusukilo township in Kitwe has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour by the Kitwe Magistrate’s Court for hitting his friend with a hammer.
Magistrate Kampinda Chipamu sentenced Maxwell Mulundu after he pleaded guilty to the charge of assault.
Facts before the court are that on November 18, this year, in Kitwe, Mulundu allegedly assaulted Michael Mwansa.
“I have considered the fact that you are a first offender who readily admitted to the charge and, therefore, have not wasted the court’s time.
“However, what you did was inhuman and I will fail in my duty if I do not give you a custodial sentence. I have also taken note that you hit the victim with a hammer. I, therefore, send you to jail for 18 months with hard labour so that you can reform and reflect on your life,” she said.
Particulars of the offence are that on the material day, around 16:00 hours, a quarrel ensued between Mwansa and Mulundu in Ipusukilo and the former hit the latter with a hammer on the chest and forehead.
The court heard that the matter was reported to the police and Mulundu was charged with and arrested for assault.
