CHIFUNABULI ward councillor in Samfya district Chalwe Chisenga has partnered with the Catholic Church to support 19 girls on a school feeding
programme that is targeting Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in the area.
Ms Chisenga said in an interview that the programme, which started in January this year is expected to be extended to other schools depending on the availability of resources.
She said the programme targets girls from grade five to nine with the aim of keeping them in school especially those who come from impoverished households.
“We also conduct sensitisation programmes on sexual and reproductive health, where girls are being taught behavioural change by discouraging them from indulging in premarital sex,” Ms Chisenga said.
She said the sensitisation programmes have helped reduce incidences of early and child marriages and most children are willing to stay in school as opposed to marriage.
Ms Chisenga has called on other stakeholders to partner with her office and construct a Youth Training Skills Centre.
She said the only skills training institute in Samfya district is 45 kilometres from Chifunabulu ward making it impossible for youths to walk to and from the learning centre.
Ms Chisenga said the training institute will help create self-employment for the youths who are the majority in the area which has a population of 15,000.
She said Government is passionate on youth empowerment and it is cardinal that various stakeholders take keen interest in providing the youths with necessary programmes to uplift their livelihood.
