KITWE City Council police yesterday shut down 27 liquor stores for allegedly failing to comply with liquor trading regulations.
Among the closed shops are Black Gate, Keg and Coppersmith, Chillers Corner, Mukula and Elelemwa Bar.
Council public relations manager Roy Kuseka said in a statement that the local authority has embarked on an exercise to inspect liquor stores in the city.
Mr Kuseka said the inspection was conducted to monitor if liquor traders are adhering to the Liquor Licences Act Cap 20 of 2001 and the Public Health Act Cap 295, and if they had fire certificates.
“The local authority has shut down 27 bars and confiscated 70 cases of beer and 100 bottles of spirits for failing to comply with the liquor trading regulations,” he said.
