Copperbelt PS warns mealie-meal smugglers

COPPERBELT permanent secretary Howard Sikwela has warned residents against smuggling mealie-meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) because the vice is creating an artificial shortage of the staple food in the province.
Reverend Sikwela said in an interview yesterday that the smuggling of mealie-meal resulted in an increase in the price of the commodity in most towns on the Copperbelt.
“The residents of the Copperbelt must realise that it will be them to suffer as a result of smuggling mealie-meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo. If there is a shortage of mealie-meal here, the price will definitely go up and they will have to bear the cost,” he said.READ MORE
