I WISH to congratulate the senior Chipolopolo Boys on qualifying for the 2018 Kenya African Nations Championship (CHAN) football tournament.
This was after Zambia thumped South Africa 2-0 last Saturday during the second round return leg of the qualifier.
The teams went into the second round return leg encounter of the qualifier on a 2-all draw, having drawn in the first game in South Africa a week earlier.
The game was tough and South Africa as well as Zambia made several attempts at goal to shake the net, but to no avail. In essence, both teams were wasteful at goal during the first-half of the match.
However, Justin Shonga’s brace in the 79th and 82nd minutes was what Zambia needed to qualify on a 4-2 aggregate. Coach Wedson Nyirenda and the technical bench assembled a strong team which showed character by silencing South Africa with a resounding 2-nil victory.
The victory is good for the country considering that some soccer fans have been hostile towards the senior team in the recent past. Ultimately, the victory has shamed some unpatriotic soccer fans who booed our national team during the international friendly match against Ethiopia a fortnight ago. The friendly game ended in a goalless draw.
All said and done, let me hasten to mention here that the senior Chipolopolo are still a good team which can deliver provided we give the coaching bench and the team ample time. The victory has elated us and it is even a morale-booster ahead of the forthcoming 2018 Russia World Cup qualifier against Algeria next month.
