CONGRATULATIONS to the Zambia national soccer team on storming the finals of the Senior COSAFA football tournament last Wednesday after triumphing over Zimbabwe, the not so brave warriors 4-2 via penalty shootout.
This was after the two archrivals played to a barren draw in regulation time in a mouth-watering encounter dubbed as battle of the Zambezi.
The fixture was the semifinal between the two teams.
The Aggrey Chiyangi coached side walloped the Flames of Malawi in the quarterfinals of the tournament by the same margin last Monday after the two teams drew 2 all in regulation time.
Zimbabwe beat Zambia 3-1 and 4-2 in the COSAFA finals of the 2017 and 2018 respectively.
However, this match was not only exciting but also tough because Zambia was aiming at ending Zimbabwe’s dominance over the former in the COSAFA football tournament in the previous two editions.
Zimbabwe played better football than Zambia in the regulation time and the best the latter did was not to allow a goal by defending so well.
After the deadlock between the two sides, the match was to be decided through penalty shootout.
Bruce Musakanya, Jack Chirwa, Mwila Phiri and Thandi Mwape were on target for Zambia netting all the four vital goals. On the other hand, Zimbabwe scored through Marvelous Nakamba and Tendai Darikwa.
The victory for Zambia ended Zimbabwe’s edge on the former. Botswana will play Zambia in the Senior COSAFA tournament slated for today. The latter is eyeing for the fifth COSAFA trophy to their name.
Go Zambia go and conquer. Through hard work, discipline and focus victory is certain in the final fixture of the tournament.
