FORMER Zambia midfielder Clifford Mulenga has joined Zesco United.
And Zesco’s Kenya defender David Odhiambo is anticipating a tough encounter against Zambia in next month’s 2017 Gabon Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Mulenga (right) has left South African top side Ajax Cape Town.
Zesco public relations officer Katebe Chengo confirmed in Ndola yesterday that Mulenga is already training with the team.
“He [Mulenga] has joined us from Ajax Cape Town as a free agent. Mulenga is a very good player, we want to retain the league and defend the Barclays Cup,†Chengo said.
She is confident Mulenga will add depth to the squad.
“We have signed a quick and very creative winger whose qualities and credentials will greatly benefit the club,†Chengo said.
Mulenga was crowned 2007 Africa-young-player-of-the-year after guiding the Zambia under-20 national team to fourth-place finish at the Africa Youth Championship in Congo-Brazzaville and to the second round at the World Youth Championship in Canada.
Mulenga, a former Chiparamba Academy player, went on to feature for Bidvest Wits, Pretoria University, Thanda Royal Zulu, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United, all South African outfits.
Mulenga also featured for Swedish side Orgryte IS in 2008 on loan from Pretoria University.
Former Zambia coach Herve Renard expelled Mulenga from the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations for alleged indiscipline and the Chipolopolo went on to win the trophy.
Meanwhile, Odhiambo said the Harambee Stars are ready to face the Chipolopolo.
“The Kenyan technical bench has already invited me for the match, I have received the invitation. I will be leaving the country [Zambia] at the monthend to join my friends in camp,†said Odhiambo from Ndola yesterday.
He said Zambia has good players who are playing well for their respective clubs.
Odhiambo is eager to play against club-mate Kondwani Mtonga.
The Chipolopolo face Kenya on September 5 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Zambia kicked off the campaign with a goalless draw against Guinea Bissau at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on June 13 while Kenya drew 1-1 against Congo- Brazzaville.
