Chumfwa tops chess trials

INTERNATIONAL Master (IM) Stanley Chumfwa on Sunday won the Africa Individual Chess Championship trials held at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka after amassing three points.
In second position was another IM Daniel Jere while FIDE master Richmond Phiri was third.
The two amassed 2.5 points apiece.
Other players who took part in the trials include International Masters Kelvin Chumfwa and Gillian Bwalya, who garnered two and zero points, respectively.
The top three players automatically qualify for next month’s Africa Individual Chess Championship to be held in Windhoek, Namibia.
The championship will run from December 15 to 23.
And in the women’s category, FIDE master Epah Jere, Linda Hamoonga and Constance Mbatha earned qualification after finishing in the top three positions.
Epah and Hamoonga tied on 5.5 points while Mbatha had four points.
The women’s category attracted nine players who competed over six rounds.
