Christmas Day thief jailed

KALUNGA MUSONDA, Kabwe
WHILE many people across Zambia were celebrating Christmas, a 29-year-old man of Kabwe opted to steal seven chickens valued at K210.
But things did not go well for Paul Kawila because the owner of the chickens apprehended him and took him to the police where he spent Christmas behind bars.
Kabwe principal resident magistrate John Mbuzi yesterday found Kawila guilty and sentenced him to one year and six months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing the chickens belonging to Bob Shaloba.
In mitigation, Kawila pleaded with the court to exercise leniency on him because he has two children to look after and next month, he is expected to go into college to study nursing, and that if he is jailed, he will lose the opportunity for a better life.
