MELODY MUPETA, Kitwe
A 20-YEAR-OLD woman of Kitwe has pleaded guilty to stealing a child, money and a mobile phone and has been sentenced to two
and half years simple imprisonment.
This is in a case in which Noreen Mazuba of Kawama township was charged with two counts of stealing a child together with a mobile phone and K600 cash she found with the girl.
Magistrate Dominic Lesa sentenced Mazuba to six months simple imprisonment for stealing the child and two years for theft of K600 and a mobile phone.
He hopes this will deter would be offenders from committing similar crimes.
Earlier, the 12-year-old girl testified that Mazuba abducted her while she was waiting for her sister at a supermarket in Kitwe’s central business district and took her to Mufulira where she found some men waiting for her.
The girl told the court that this happened on May 30 this year.
She said her elder sister had gone to get a shopping basket when a woman she could not identify approached her and said the girl’s sister had requested the girl to be picked and taken to where she was.
The girl followed Mazuba who led her to Chisokone market, to a section where shoes are sold but the sister was not there.
The girl explained that she and Mazuba remained at the market until 19:00 hours when Mazuba put her on a bus to Mufulira, and instructed the driver to drop the girl at a named bus station.
While in Mufulira and still on the bus, the girl said she saw some men suddenly approaching but the bus driver quickly drove off to Mufulira Central Police where she explained to the officers what had happened.
In mitigation, Mazuba asked for forgiveness from the girl’s mother, Leah Mwape, saying she has a child who is asthmatic.
But magistrate Lesa sentenced Mazuba to six months simple imprisonment for stealing a child and another two years for theft of K600 and a mobile phone.
