Child marriage worries Kapata

ARTHUR MWANSA, Rufunsa
MINISTER of Tourism and Arts Jean Kapata is concerned that child marriage has remained a big challenge in Chieftainess Shikabeta’s chiefdom.
Mrs Kapata said this recently when she officiated at this year’s Nkombalyanga traditional ceremony of the Soli people in Rufunsa District.
“Government is still alive to the many challenges facing our people in this chiefdom. For example, the issue of child marriages has remained a big challenge for chiefdom Shekabeta and as well as for Government,” the Minister said.
The Mandevu member of Parliament said although poverty has remained an active driver of child marriage it should not be an excuse to marrying off under aged children.
Mrs Kapata said, “It is for this reason that we should collectively stop using poverty as an excuse for marrying off our under aged children. In an event, marrying off our under aged children condemns us to the vicious cycle of poverty as we remove them from school.”
