Chief Puta wants loans for fish farmers

KUNDANJI SINKOLONGO, Chiengi
SENIOR Chief Puta of the Bwile People of Chiengi district in Luapula Province has urged the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to empower fish farmers in his chiefdom with loans to boost their businesses in line with Government’s economic diversification programme.
Chief Puta said in an interview recently that people in his chiefdom have shown commitment to fish farming, but do not have resources to make any progress.
He said empowering fish farmers in his area with soft loans would make it easier to restock Lake Mweru where fish stocks have depleted drastically.
“We have small fish farmers in my chiefdom, but they lack empowerment to go commercial. If the Ministry of Livestock came up with soft loans to empower our farmers, we can restock fish in Lake Mweru,” he said.
Chief Puta also said he is committed to working with Government to diversify the economy, with a bias towards agriculture.
He said for a long time, the Zambian economy has depended mostly on copper but that the coming of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock would help diversify it.
