Chibuku truck plunges into river

A MITSUBISHI Fuso Fighter truck laden with drums of opaque beer commonly known as Chibuku has plunged into the Kafue River in Mpongwe, forcing the Engineering Services Corporation (ESCO) to suspend pontoon operations.
The brakes of the truck failed while the driver was trying to park at the pontoon’s docking bay and the vehicle rolled onto the vessel and plunged into the river.
Mpongwe district commissioner Boniface Chushi said in an interview yesterday that the accident happened on Sunday around 16:00 hours.
Mr Chuchi said the driver identified as Enos Mafa, 42, of Luanshya, escaped unhurt.
“The driver was trying to park on the pontoon docking area, but in the process the truck developed a mechanical fault and plunged into the river thereby disrupting operations of the pontoon,” Mr Chushi said.
He said ESCO is doing everything possible to retrieve the truck and normalise pontoon operations.
