Chibombo DC optimistic of bumper harvest

CHIBOMBO district commissioner Banabas Musopelo is hopeful that despite the invasion of fields by armyworms, the area will still record a bumper maize harvest for the 2016/2017 farming season.
The district was one of the waste affected and Government responded by providing free chemicals to farmers to fight the pests.
Government also deployed the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to help with the spraying of affected maize fields.
“Come harvest time my district is expected to record a bumper harvest because we have committed farmers,” Mr Musopelo said.
He said in an interview that Government’s quick intervention prevented the destruction of maize in Chibombo.
Mr Musopelo commended ZNS for its role in the fight against the armyworms.
“As Chibombo, we have not suffered much loss when it comes to the effect that armyworms had on other farms,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Musopelo has said 70 percent of e-voucher cards under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) have been activated and that farmers were accessing farming inputs.
He said the activation of the cards is a positive development because it has enabled the farmers to access farming inputs.
Mr Musopelo urged the farmers to be patient with Government regarding the challenges in the activation of their cards.
“We cannot complain about any farming inputs in Chibombo because we have seen the commitment of the government,” Mr Musopelo said.
