‘Beware of US trade wars’

ZAMBIA has been advised to be wary of the global implications of the Trump’s trade war to avoid being a dumping ground for goods, an economist has said.
Early this year, President Donald Trump proposed to impose heavy tariffs on imported steel and aluminium especially, from China and this has raised fears of an international trade war.
Barclays Group Plc head of Africa macro research senior economist Jeff Gable told journalists during an interview recently that there is need for Zambia to be more alert of trade wars as they usually start small but have the potential to escalate into bigger fiscal challenges.
“Taking interest into the global economic issue will help the country to hedge against any shocks that may negatively impact on the manufacturing sector.
