Barbara Banda opens door

Soccer Review with STEPHEN PHIRI
SHE-POLOPOLO midfielder Barbara Banda has scored a first.
Banda has trekked to Spain, where Zambia has no representation in the men’s La Liga.
This is a milestone and worth celebrating as a nation.
Banda defied odds and signed a two-year deal with Spanish Premier Division side EDF Logrono.
Well done Banda and the sky is the limit.
Banda has opened the door for the women-folk to emulate.
“I have just resumed training, it is a good team. I will make sure that I contribute a lot to the team. Everything is okay, it is my first time in Spain. My teammates are okay and they have welcomed me very well,” Banda said during her unveiling last Wednesday.
Banda, formerly of Green Buffaloes, should be commended for being focused.
With her skill, Banda could find herself featuring for a big club in Spain or in England.
Zambia needs a lot of players, both men and women, dotted across Europe to be recognised as a football powerhouse.
It will raise the profile of our league and the She-polopolo.
National women team players have a chance to impress foreign scouts during the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off on November 17 in Ghana.
Focus from other Spanish clubs will be following the She-polopolo during the continental showpiece.
The players should put in their best so that a good number of them could trek to Europe after the Ghana finals.
It will not be easy against defending champions Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya at the Africa Cup of Nations, but with determination the players could progress to the semi-finals and subsequently to the final.
Should the She-polopolo finish among the top three in Ghana, they will qualify for the World Cup slated for France next year.
There is a lot at stake for the She-polopolo to put in a good shift and put Zambia on the world map.
The scouts are in need of players to take to Europe and the She-polopolo queens are not short of talent.
The Bruce Mwape-led She-polopolo technical bench should psych the players to believe in themselves that it is possible to win the trophy.
After all where there is a will there is a way.
All the best to the She-polopolo.
