Bandits flee botched robbery

ELIZABETH CHATUVELA, Mongu
POLICE in Mongu have recovered an AK47 rifle with three live bullets after foiling a robbery by three masked men who attacked a local businessman on the Mongu-Lusaka road.
Western Province commissioner of Police Charles Lungu said the attack happened on Tuesday around 20:00 hours.
Mr Lungu said the bandits armed with an AK47 rifle mounted a fake police checkpoint before Nalwei and attacked a local businessman only identified as Mr Sakai, who was going to Lusaka to buy goods for his business.
“Apparently, the criminals discharged three rounds but the fourth one jammed. It was at this point that the passengers who were travelling with Mr Sakai confronted the criminals and they fled into the bush,” he said.
Mr Lungu said police also managed to recover three beacons, a work suit and three empty cartridges at the scene.
He said police are vigorously investigating the matter.
