Baby given Chibuku, dies

A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy of Chipata has died after his mother allegedly made him take opaque beer known as Chibuku.
Eastern Province commissioner of police Alex Chilufya named the deceased as Prince Banda of Chikalaba village in Paramount Chief Mpezeni’s chiefdom.

Mr Chilufya said the incident happened on Wednesday when Faidesi Zulu, 33, went to her brother’s house and found people taking beer. The police chief said Ms Zulu joined them after which she allegedly gave some of the beer to her son.

He said the child got drunk and slept and was later awakened by the mother, who gave him milk after realising that he was dazed.
Mr Chilufya said the milk allegedly triggered a reaction and left the boy weak.
“After being given milk, the boy started vomiting and purging,” Mr Chilufya said.
He said the child died around 01:00 hours on Friday.
Mr Chilufya said the suspect is in custody helping police with investigations.
